How To Choose The Best Laptop? [Complete Guideline]

Buying a laptop can be confusing unless you know the basics. If you know all the features of a laptop properly, it will be easy for you to find exactly what you want. The funny thing is that manufacturers’ websites may disappoint you with the model you want to buy because they always say good things about them. But I will tell you everything about how to choose the best laptop.

8 Essential Tips To Know Before Buying A Laptop

If you don’t know much about laptops then the tips below are for you. You can easily buy the best laptop by following these tips. So, let’s get started.

Tip-1: Select Your Operating System

Before you start looking at laptops, you can be sure which operating system is best for you. Think about which software you will run and which operating system will be best for it. However, below are descriptions of the four major computer operating systems. Check which one is right for you.

Windows: In this Windows you can use Microsoft Office like MS Office, Access. You will also find many more Windows laptop options to choose from.

macOS: It’s a little more beginner-friendly than Windows. But if you don’t have experience running an iPad or iPhone, this is probably not your first choice.

Chrome OS: Chrome OS is a good choice for doing most of the work on the laptop in a web browser. Chrome laptops (Chromebooks) are the cheapest and least powerful. So, if you have a low budget, consider Chrome OS.

Linux: If you do not need MS Office and have nothing to learn, you can use Linux. You can also install Linux on the built-in laptop hardware. But keep in mind that you can’t run popular apps like Adobe’s Creative Suite and MS Office. However, LibreOffice, Adobe Lightroom, and GIMP (Adobe Photoshop) can be used as alternatives.

Tip-2: Select Processor (CPUs)

You also need to know about the CPU to get an idea of what operating system you want and the software you want to run. This will give you an idea of the minimum hardware specification. I think you should check your processor first before buying a laptop.

However, there are basically two companies that make laptop processors: Intel and AMD.

Intel Processors

The processors available from Intel are Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, and Core i9. Here, the Core i3 is the least powerful, and Core i9 is the most powerful processor. Each of these processors has some numbers and characters that indicate the quality of the processor. Like in Core i5-10510U, the number “10” here refers to generation. That means it is a tenth-generation laptop.

It may be followed by two or three digits, such as “510,” which indicates the performance of the processor. The larger the number, the stronger the chip. The letters that follow are the titles of Intel. As you can see here, Y, U, and H. Here, U chips are optimized as “energy efficient”. Y series chips have been optimized for battery life, and H series chips have been optimized for performance.

AMD Processors

If you are a video editor or a game editor, you will benefit from buying an AMD processor. Like the Intel processor, it also has some number indicators, like AMD Ryzen 5 3600X. The number “3” here is the generation and the number “6” indicates performance. Besides, the next two numbers have no effect.

However, the letter “X” at the end indicates high performance. If there is a “U”, then it means that it has very low energy. However, in terms of generation, it is the same as Intel. Like Intel Core i3 and Ryzen 3, Intel Core i7 and Ryzen 7 are almost the same.

Tip-3: Select Graphics Card

The laptop’s graphics card is also called “discrete” graphics or GPU. In most situations, though, the name of the processor’s motherboard is included. The user will benefit greatly from the “Integrated Graphics” solution. With these graphics, you can comfortably view HD movies and play casual games.

A separate graphics card is required if you are a gamer or perform a lot of video editing. A distinct and far more potent 6 Separate graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia are available for laptops. The GeForce GTX 1080 Max-Q is a strong 2,000-tier graphics card that might deplete your battery life.

Max-Q cards are generally 15 to 25% less powerful than desktop cards, although they are still capable of gaming and video editing.

Tip-4: Select The RAM

RAM, or random-access memory, is what your laptop uses to store data while the CPU processes it. Consider RAM to be your workstation. You should be able to fit whatever you’re working on right now on your desk. Things slide off if your desk is too small, and you can’t work on them. Similarly, if you run out of RAM, you won’t be able to open any more browser tabs or complete your movie compilation. Your laptop will eventually freeze and need to be rebooted.

For the average Windows user, eight gigabytes of RAM should be enough, but increasing it to 16 GB will significantly improve your laptop’s performance. Before making a purchase, check to see if the RAM is soldered to the motherboard. You won’t be able to upgrade the RAM yourself if it’s soldered. Again, you’ll need at least 16 GB of RAM if you’re creating and compiling software or editing video clips, both of which take a lot of RAM. If you can afford it, you’ll probably be pleased with 32 GB.

Tip-4: Select The Spinning Drive or SSD Storage

All of your data will be stored on the hard disk. Consider it the file cupboard next to your desk. Solid-state drives (SSDs) are the most popular option these days. However, some inexpensive laptops still utilize spinning disks. If you can afford it, get an SSD disk with at least 256 GB of storage.

SSDs are speedier, especially if they employ an NVMe connection, which transfers data faster in and out of the hard drive than the previous SATA standard. Laptops with an SSD with NVMe to run the OS but older SATA drives to store data are sometimes available. This provides you with the best of both worlds: speed where you really need it while remaining cost-effective.

I recommend you at least 256 GB SSD If you store everything in the cloud, you may be able to go with less. But there may be a need in the future, so it is better to have space. If you plan to install a lot of software or games, you need more space.

Tip-5: Check The Ports

Although the CPU, hard drive, and RAM performance of the laptop are of paramount importance, the type and size of the laptop port are also important. Laptop USB devices are usually plugged into these ports. Require at least a USB-A, a USB-C, and a headset jack/microphone.

However, I recommend buying laptops that can charge via USB-C. Also, if you are a photographer, you need to have an SD or MicroSD card reader to take pictures from your camera to your laptop.

Tip-6: Check The Laptop Hinges And Webcam

You need to have a valid webcam on your laptop. There are some laptops from 2021 that do not have a webcam. Currently, most webcams are 720p, especially on low-cost laptops. 720p is fine if not used too much. But nowadays, many people are happier with their 1080p cameras.

If you buy a laptop, it is better to check it before. If possible, go to a local store so you can check out a laptop with hinges. Try to open the laptop with one hand. In fact, not being able to open your laptop with one hand is very annoying.
